Here at NHM Electrical Services in Ayrshire we are frequently asked questions about RCD’s and what their role is. So how important is an RCD? Let’s take a look.

What is an RCD?

An RCD, short for Residual Current Device, is a protective device designed to prevent electrical shocks from occurring should a person come into contact with a live wire. Found on your fuseboard, an RCD is primarily a lifesaving device that also provides some protection from electrical fires.

Why is an RCD important?

As I mentioned above, an RCD is an important lifesaving safety device that prevents fatal electrical shocks. Designed to react within milliseconds, it continuously monitors the electrical current that flows through the circuit it protects. Once it detects an imbalance in the current it shuts the power off instantaneously, preventing you or your loved one from receiving a shock. RCDs are a crucial safety feature, particularly in areas where you are at increased risk of electrical shock such as the bathroom, kitchen and in the garden.

Types of RCD

There are various types of RCD, each one is designed for a specific purpose. The most common type of RCD protection you’ll find on your fuseboard is an AC RCD. AC RCDs had been the industry standard for quite some time but times, and regulations, have now changed. Type AC RCDs no longer offer the best protection for you and your Ayrshire home. This is because Type AC RCDs react only to AC earth faults. This means they can be blinded by a DC current overload. An electronically controlled device, such as your washing machine, can introduce DC current into your homes wiring and effectively disable the RCD. The RCD is then unable to protect you, placing you in potential danger.

When type AC RCDs were first introduced, our homes, and the technology within them, were very different. As technology has progressed, almost every socket in the average Ayrshire home has a sophisticated piece of electronic equipment plugged into it, increasing the potential for DC feedback. Everything with an electronic chip (that includes your washing machine, games systems and even your LED lighting) requires a different kind of RCD – a Type A RCD.

Type A RCDs are now fitted as standard in new fuse boards. They aren’t blinded by DC injections from electronics and provide superior protection for you and your family.

Do I need an RCD upgrade?

If your fuseboard was installed prior to September 2022, you may need to consider upgrading your RCDs. If the fuseboard is in good order, then this can be simple swap and will take a qualified electrician a short amount of time to carry out. If your fuseboard is older and is beginning to show signs of wear and tear it may be best to upgrade the whole fuseboard. If you are in any doubt, give me a call.
